This week was the week that our HM09 numbers went through the roof... and beyond. I am so happy to be a part of this company during this time. Although I wasn't here during the beginning, I can see how excited everyone is as they have watched it grow to unimaginable heights. Who would have ever thought that we would have to close registration?!
This morning, Larry spoke about the growth of our company even in times of the recession. I think it's interesting to look at SHM's success from the perspective of a student. During the past winter term, I took MGMT260 at Drexel University, which is Intro to Entrepreneurship. In that class, we learned about the stages of a start-up company: birth, growth, maturity, and decline. (I hope that's right.) Another fun fact about entrepreneurship that we learn is that 90% (or some equally ridiculously high number) of start-up companies fail within the first three to five years. SHM is clearly not one of those statistics, and I am proud to work here. Being a part of this company and contributing to it really helps to apply concepts I learned in school.
I never really thought about working for a small enterpreneurial business before I began looking for co-ops, but now I really think it's a good fit for me. I really enjoy the personalized feeling throughout the work environment. I come in contact with senior management every single week; it's only the third week and I've been in a staff meeting with the CEO. I didn't even think of things like that as an entry-level full-time position, let alone a college intern.
To wrap up this random train of thoughts... Now when I'm sitting in class and wondering to myself, "When will I EVER need to know this? Or even be able to apply it to anything that I will ever do?" I will be more patient. You never know where life will lead you...
