It is nearing the end of my second week at SHM, and I'm starting to feel comfortable with the environment. Some things that are still new and hard to grasp for me are: management and the independence we're given as MAs.
As far as management goes, it is not only time management and being managed by marketing leads and Todd that I think will be difficult. A lot of the difficulties are me being able to manage myself and the way in which I approach my work. Sometimes I over-analyze things and make them more complicated than they need to be. Sometimes I get stuck really easily and I lose confidence in my work. Also, Todd talked to me about managing up, which is something that I've never done before in the work environment. Although now that I think about it, the same thing happens with my parents. Sometimes, they don't understand certain things or can't see things from a different perspective. That's where I step in. So since we are all a family, I can relate those skills to SHM as well.
Also in my previous work experience, there was no real independence. I had flexible hours and whatnot, but I had specific tasks to do and a specific way to do them. Here, I am able to own my work to the fullest extent, and that is definitely something that I will strive to take advantage of. Even though it seems like a difficult concept now, I'm sure that by the time I leave SHM, I will admire the fact that I was given the opportunity to be independent.
