Ladies-
So, you're almost through a month of working at SHM, and you think maybe, just maybe, you know what you do here.
Well, lets find out. Your assignment for this week is to write your "elevator speech". Wikipedia defines an elevator speech as:
"an overview of an idea for a product, service, or project. The name reflects the fact that an elevator pitch can be delivered in the time span of an elevator ride (for example, thirty seconds and 100-150 words)."
To help you, here are a few links:

Most of the full timers have crafted an elevator speech, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask around. The more creative - the better.
Looking forward to reading them!

Professional Development
My perception of professional development is discovering and understanding personal attributes and goals, in order to apply them to a career. You must first understand yourself, your purpose, your needs and desires. At this stage in my career, the most important things to focus on are personal learning and growth, management of personal and professional responsibilites and LIFE in general, and education. Eventually I will return to school for my Master's degree to become a professor and own my own firm. Education is important, as well as learning overall. The most important things I have learned in life did not come from the classroom. Over time, I feel these needs will not change but, there will be varied emphasis on each of them. I will always be in the process of learning myself. I will know more about myself, but there will always things to discover. That will come from experience. I grow each day, my perception shifts daily. Today teaches me the lesson learned tomorrow. I will be become much more adept at managing my life and responsibilites. My life will evolve in different stages, in which I will deal with accordingly. Education and knowledge are always crucial components in my career, because teaching will be a part of my career. Personal and professional development is a hand in hand relationship. The better I understand myself, the better I can serve my professional community. Over time these two arenas will merge more and more, and to me that IS success.
Not the Stuff They Teach You or the Stuff On TV
I don't know exactly how "professional development" is defined, but this is my personal perspective when I think those two words:
To me, a lot of professional development is "the stuff they don't teach you in school." It comes from the lessons you learn while experiencing life in a professional environment. Any type of development at work is something that will affect other aspects in your life - and vice versa. Aspects of life outside of work will affect how you perform professionally.
At this stage in my career, I am still learning a lot because most of what I know is based off of what I learn in the classroom. I don't have that much experience in the "real world," so I am really depending on SHM to introduce me to that.
I think the majority of professional development needs are universal. There are skills that almost all careers and jobs require. Then, there are obviously those tailored to your job specifically. Everyone needs management, assessment, and critical thinking skills. Not everyone needs to work creatively or socially as often. As a student, I know I will be in many different positions until I land my career, and each experience will help develop and hone different attributes of mine.
P.S. Todd is like Michael Scott in many ways. Actually, this office has uncanny similarities to "The Office," which motivates me to come into work some days.

We really never stop growing..
The phrase professional development means to me my path to success. I think that success is a broad term and only I can define what I think my own success is. I’m not going to go into that right now but in order for me to become successful I need to undergo a lot of professional development. Right now I feel like I’m “developing faster” than the “normal” path because not only am I working towards my degree, and I’m getting work experience at the same time. I think that to undergo professional development there are many people and experiences one must go through in order to understand their own growth and the direction and pace of the development. For example, coming to SHM the environment is completely different than any other job I have worked at thus far. Being able to adapt and grow within the office has already helped me to not only be coached and mentored, but to work as a team player and individual. Becoming a more professionally developed person takes a long amount of time. To be professionally “seasoned” you need the life experience. Every person is different, so the evolution over time will be an individual transformation. I think that we all evolve to hopefully what we want to become, the amount of time and detours individuals may take will we different. Personally I think I will always have room to grow, but that is mostly because I change my goals on a daily basis, but then again so does the way business is run! Right now I feel like I am in the right spot for the time because when I hear the word evolving I now think about hospital medicine and how SHM is right in the prime of their profession growth, as I am.
So I was watching "The Office"..
and I was intrigued by the slightest detail. First of all, great show. Secondly, I noticed that everyone dresses so professionally in that show, and they don't do anything! That office is a joke, and only some of the co-workers actually contribute to the company. And then I thought about my workplace at SHM and realized how informal it is. Many employees come dressed in jeans, sometimes fashionably ripped; however, everyone still works hard and gets their job done. Everyone contributes to SHM!
It's rediculous how the charcaters in "The Office" try to present themeselves as hard-working individuals by dressing so formally and talking about procedures in a complicated and serious manner. Whereas at SHM, my co-workers all make fun of each other, chit-chat, dress not as formally, and still work very hard. SHM has nothing but smart individuals that are dedicated to what they do, which is the complete opposite of the show. This shows you that you can't just look good and pretend youre getting work done lol. Such charcaters in "The Office" are simply putting up an act.
So I'm glad that SHM is formal and informal at the same time. It's a great environment and I'm glad that there are people here that are so hard working and actually want to be here!

Professionalism
It’s sad that I googled the definition of “professional development” before I started writing this. Maybe it’s because this is my first real job ever! Lol. But I decided to create my own meaning of professional development. To me, it simply means learning and growing. As any intern/worker/professional gains knowledge through learning and work experience, they grow and develop into great thinkers that contribute to society. This is what professional development is, and should be. Anyone who works, no matter in what position or setting, should be able to learn and apply the learned information to his/her self as well as society. There are many aspects through which a working man or woman may do so. It could be as simple as learning to get to work on time, or more effort consuming as diagnosing a patient after analyzing test and x-ray results. Also, showing good professionalism after learning about the formalities and skills behind it is a component of professional development. All of these aspects mentioned involve learning and growing, so I feel that these two components should be combined to yield professional development.
At this stage of my career, I should be focusing on the learning everything that I can so I can gain the characteristics of a professional. I have to present myself in a clean matter. I have to shake hands with new people that I am introduced to at work. I have to learn and improve my communication skills with co-workers. There are so many ways that I can build my skills and improve in the professional world. I just have to focus on learning and applying.
Professional development needs do evolve over time as the professional world is changing and developing as well. In the corporate world, companies often expand by joining other relative companies. This demands an increased need of professional development in each individual that is involved with these companies, since there is a huge change. Another example is the growing and changing field of medicine. As this field changes, more demand in professional development is expected as new medical discoveries and technologies form and medical professionals must learn and adjust themselves to these new advances. So, I feel that professional development needs are always going to evolve, as long as the concept of change exists.

Professional Development
There are a lot of things that go into professional development, and I discovered the other day that I do not know a whole lot about this topic. To me, professional development is recognizing your goals and figuring out how to achieve your goals. As a company, there are many goals that SHM want to accomplish, and each goal that I want will ultimately help accomplish SHM's goals. In order to become truly successful, you have to grow every day - and develop yourself personally, and professionally. If one does not grow over a time span, they are obviously not listening and learning every day the way that they should be.
Currently, I think there are a lot of things that I need to develop. There are a lot of long term and short term tasks that I need to complete in order to develop. When it comes to a daily basis - I need to be more vocal, and not be afraid to ask questions, because in the long run, it will allow me to grow in the professional world. Also, I need to focus more on learning something every day. To this point, I have learned a lot of things. However, thus far in my career, I know about one thousandth, or maybe even less of that, of what I will need to know. There will never be a point where I have all the knowledge in the world, but there will be a point that I know enough to be success and teach that knowledge to others on a daily basis. Over time, professional development grows a lot. Right now, I believe communication is a big part of mine - but as I grow, I do not think it will be as big as it is now. However, with evey job - the communication is different, so even though I may grow an immense amount here at SHM, my next job may have different approaches that I will then have to adjust to. Therefore, I guess the needs are always there for development - but with each stage in your life, they change!
That's all for now... seeya!

Rainy day in the city
Today I was walking to staples and I got "lost" in the city. When I say lost I really wasn't because I knew I was on Walnut Street yet I didn't know where I was headed (figuratively..I knew I needed to find staples!) Anyways, it started to rain and everyone got frantic with their umbrellas and hiding under awnings, as I just kept walking looking for where I was going. It dawned on me that I definitely stuck out, caught up in my own world- listening to my iPod only focusing on where I was.. There was the usual “business man” passersby and later on my adventure I wondered if I would become someone like that- running under awnings in hopes to not ruin my suit or something, or am I going to marry someone like that?! Anyways, the whole concept of Corporate America has been weighing heavy on my mind lately and it is intriguing because I am getting my first taste of it here at SHM, but even just looking at the different aspects whether on my way to and from work, at work, or just through daily observation. This to me is an illustration of my professional growth- there I was in the street doing the exact opposite of everyone else. I feel that this is just me sometimes and I need to learn ways that other people do things even if it’s not the way I would do it. Not to say that I am a hard person to get along with or to teach something to, but it is one of the areas I need to grow in and would like to understand others more, professionally & personally!
Step 1 Post
Working here daily reaffirms my need to work for myself! I remember in the Branding Luncheon, when he talked about being versatile by being able to work for any company. He considered this a personal asset. I do not think that I lack this quality, I just don't want it lol! Lately I have been thinking about post-college (since I am graduating next June) in terms of what and where I will take my design. I have considering Washington DC, Chicago, or Northern Jersey/NYC area. To be frank, I don't like other people dictating what I design. There is not much satisfaction in that. Every piece of design I create here all ties back to SHM. Where I want to take my design is much more focused, and only I can manifest the. Designing in this medium though, to is great skill to have. Working at SHM not only builds character through interaction with people, you also learn much about yourself working with others. Everything is meant. Even though my internship here is not exactly what I want to do, I am LEARNING. Everything I learn here, I WILL need in future. So everyday, I soak it up....and learn to laugh a little....it helps.

Going on, and on, and on......
Today, I sat in during the PR task force meeting, and it was really interesting to me. I think that there are a lot of things that some people may sweep under the rug that PR picks up on. Little things such as, SHM members quoting something in an article, can turn into a big deal with PR. To me, that is really interesting, and I want to understand PR even more. I have never thought of all the things that go into a business in order for the company to be truly successful. After my PR meeting, I also encountered something that was intriguing. While I was up at the front desk, a man called me so estatic that HM09 was sold out. He was going on, and on, and on, and on about how this is the only time he has ever heard of an event selling out. I knew that HM09 was going to be a huge, historic event, but this made me realize how big it is to others outside of SHM09. Today was a good day, to say the least!
Ashleeey Berger
This post "Letter to Supervisor" would go to Ashley. She is my supervisor, and really the sole person I report to.
Dear Ashley,
We work fast!....and like it. I know there are a lot of times where you are like "Breathe", "Slow Down". I am working on staying calm and not always running at miles per minute. I do pretty much everything in a quick manner. I am also a perfectionist, and I am trying to break out of that! I am very high strung when I am not steadily concentrating. My mind is filled with so many things, and they all move at the speed of light. I still have a lot on my plate from day to day, and I am learning to manage. I think that you will get to know more about me and my life as time progresses. I appreciate your daily patience with me, because I know that you have sooo much to do. Coordinating graphic design is just a part of all the responsibilties. I do want to know that everyday for me is not bright and sunny. Somedays I'm just like (siiiiiiigh)))))))......but it doesn't change my drive. I work hard and give each day 100%. My goal is always do the task, and do it well. I am also interested in knowing what you want to do with your life. What are your future goals? I continually look foward to working with you!

Growth...
It's only Monday and already everyone is jumping into full gear to respond to HM09 and its high demand... by tomorrow. So needless to say, it's a little hectic. Days like this make me realize the big picture: as my environment (SHM) is growing, I grow as well. Because there are so many things that need to be done, we've worked really hard to prioritize and delegate. These are the kind of skills that are essential to management in the workforce, and due to the success of HM09, I am getting a first-hand experience. Being in the middle of all this buzz, I am able to work on my own tasks and projects, which I love. It seems like when there are slow days, it's easier to get distracted (and for longer periods of time). However, when I always have something to do, it gives me more motivation to try and get everything done - and done right. That doesn't mean that everyday should be a busy day though...
So we have a lot of disappointing news to deliver to prospective attendees in the next upcoming weeks, but that's good news for us. :) Keep up the great work, everyone!

Professional Development 101
Hi Everyone!!!
We're almost at the end of your first month...wow! I very much enjoyed reading everyone's "open letters" to their teams (Natasha, let's get yours in)...and I know your supervisors have been reading them as well...who knows, they might even reply to your letters here.
All of you have really started to find your way within all the SHM craziness and that's great to see! It's been fun to get to know each of you a little more and I hope you all know how much we appreciate all that you've done to date.
This week's blog is the last of the intro topics...next week we're going to start diving into some heavier stuff (marketing, PR, web 2.0, leadership). But this week, it's all about professional development.
All of my folks should be knee deep, working with their direct supervisors, on their professional development plans for the next five months. While full timers are able to look out to a longer horizon in writing their plans, there is no reason that you guys can't do the same think, but on a smaller scale (Reshma - I'm sure you're having conversations with Joy but unsure of whether or not you'll do a formal plan, the concepts are still the same).
With all of that as lead up...here's this week's assignment.
Step 1 - By Wednesday
Write a blog that has nothing to do about professional development. It can be something you've seen that's intrigued you...a question you're ponder or even a thought you want to share...this is your post, only rule is that it has to tie back to either SHM or your own professional growth.
Step 2 - By Friday
Write a post, responding to these questions:
"What does the phrase "professional development" mean to you? What do you see as the most important things to focus in on with your professional development at this stage in your career? How do professional development needs evolve over time (or do they)?"
That's all I've got - see you Monday!

4:28pm I didn't put this off, I just thought all week..
Christine,
First of all I am very excited to be working so closely with you. Already, I feel like we have a lot in common and work well together. I think it’s even better that you were already an MA and know how I feel which shows when I have a confused look on my face and you already are able to pick that up and explain things in a different way. I really appreciate that and as much as I try not to make mistakes (which I already have made a whole bunch..!) but at the same time I learn from them because you let me know what I’m doing wrong and how to fix it! I’m starting to get IMIS much more and hope I can become an expert sometime soon. Also, as you may have read from my previous blog I am trying to unleash my creativity.. I had fun making that FHM order form and liked your direction and how you let me do my own thing. That kind of task freaks me out at first because I am less confident in having a broad scheme of a project but I did enjoy it! I look forward to the chapters and really getting into the website, I hope that in six months we will have come a long way!
George,
I excited for our first meeting together today, although postponed for a bit I’m ready to get into some new elements of the company and see exactly what you do. I think that it’s going to be fun- and I am excited to work with you. I think you are like me in that, we have a good time but get our work done. I hope to learn more market analysis and more of what you were telling me about membership and actually going around to hospitals to promote and spread SHM!
Well I wrote the about before our meeting, but now that it has happened- I’m even more excited! I really want to get into market research and analysis! I’m actually looking forward to Monday and all the tasks you have assigned to me, I hope that we can help shape SHM and move into the good to great direction!
This is the perfect topic for this week because I had such an exciting day yesterday! I was fortunate enough to go with Christine to the filming of the new SHM video and actually meet some of our members, board members, and even Larry! (This was fun to tell all my friends that I got to take a cab with the CEO of my company!) I really feel more of a connection to the cause after yesterday- hearing what everyone had to say and how SHM has affected each of their lives. I also feel a huge sense of pride in what I work every day for. One of the core values is “Own your work” which for me I feel like taking pride in your work and your cause fits in quite nicely. I’ve never been in a place like the filming studio but it was a very new and exciting experience. It sounds monotonous but I really felt as if I was one of the full timers. I got to record while people were being filmed and pick out some good material that could potentially be in the movie. Also getting to sit in the conference room and discuss many different topics and ideas alongside the director and staff was really motivating to just do as much as I could. It was a perfect day to paint a big picture for me because so many elements that I have been hearing about in the past three weeks came alive. Seeing and hearing from the members and how they interacted with each other painted a picture in my head now when I hear the word “society.” I think that what we do everyday has more meaning when you see why you are working so hard, and for this movement that is only getting bigger!

Thus far...
So far, I have learned a lot of things about SHM, and what it takes for a company to be successful. However, being first hand with a lot of things, makes it that much easier to understand. When I sent out e-mails to all of the fellows not signed up for HM09, I was CC'ed from Todd, and I was able to see what he wrote to everyone. Also, I am capable of seeing little things that go into the business every day, that make it so important. I have finally realized that being organized is probably the best trait to have. I only had to deal with the emails from those doctors, but I already created a new folder on my mail to keep it more organized. I know it is a small detail, but it was something that I picked up on that I think is a really important life lesson.
Week 2---"Hardest Thing....
I think the hardest thing here is designing like an advertiser. When I create things, they are compositions--void of any goals, ideas, or objectives. It has been really a challenge designing in a corporate context, becasue I feel a lot of the work is 'emotionless'. Not that it's the worst thing in the world, but quite an experience creating things that you have no attachment to. Some of my projects do allow me freedom, which is always great. I get excited at the thought of being able to use use more than three colors in a design, lol! Nonetheless, this is great experience for me. I love working here, and designing for SHM enhances my skills everyday. I think that I have learned something new upon each day working at SHM. I think the skills from this experience will not make me only more knowledgeable, but more versatile and marketable in the working world. I appreciate everything that I learn. I like to solve problems (graphic designers are visual solutionist),and each time I run into a wall, I find my way out. Most of the time I can figure things out, but there is nithing wrong with asking questions! I will be here for five more months. In no time, I will obtain fluency designing in the context of SHM, to the point it become second nature. I will become more senstive to color choices, and most importantly typographicial hierarchy. I know working here was meant to be, and eventually I will be called utilize my skills to in another or similar arena.
First Q.I. Meeting
This past Thursday, I went to my first Q.I. meeting and I realized how much this department covers when it comes to quality initiatives. Not only does each member work on projects such as Glycemic Control or BOOST, but each member also carries a lot of responsibilities.
This meeting served as an alert for me because it made me feel that my position is very important because I am responsible for essential components of this department. I realized that the research that I do is very valuable to the Q.I. department, along with my smaller tasks such as creating surveys and keeping track of implementation guide downloads. The research itself is quite challenging so I can’t imagine how challenging future tasks will be. I’m really excited for my future responsibilities and the challenges that come along with them!

Dear Q.I. team,
I’m very happy to be a part of this team. Everyone is very friendly and still welcoming to this day! The people on this team have been great with explaining to me exactly what they do and what projects they are currently involved in. Also, they always make sure that I am doing well and that I am comfortable working here. I really appreciate this about them!
Every day I learn so much about different aspects of the medical field. I have been doing a lot of research lately and even though I have learned about many of the topics in school, I seem to learn more just from doing this research.
For this team, I will contribute everything I can, whether it is research or any other type of involvement in projects. I plan on learning quite a lot over the next few months. I feel that the department is offering me valuable types of work that I have interests in along with opportunities to become further involved. I mostly work with Joy and she has been great, ever since day 1! She has tried her best to keep me busy and involved with SHM; she is always looking for different opportunities for me to be involved in so I can learn more about the medical field. I already see myself fitting into the department because I feel that we share the same interest: quality initiatives in healthcare. I enjoy working in my department and can’t wait to see what is ahead!

Applied Entrepreneurship Management
This week was the week that our HM09 numbers went through the roof... and beyond. I am so happy to be a part of this company during this time. Although I wasn't here during the beginning, I can see how excited everyone is as they have watched it grow to unimaginable heights. Who would have ever thought that we would have to close registration?!
This morning, Larry spoke about the growth of our company even in times of the recession. I think it's interesting to look at SHM's success from the perspective of a student. During the past winter term, I took MGMT260 at Drexel University, which is Intro to Entrepreneurship. In that class, we learned about the stages of a start-up company: birth, growth, maturity, and decline. (I hope that's right.) Another fun fact about entrepreneurship that we learn is that 90% (or some equally ridiculously high number) of start-up companies fail within the first three to five years. SHM is clearly not one of those statistics, and I am proud to work here. Being a part of this company and contributing to it really helps to apply concepts I learned in school.
I never really thought about working for a small enterpreneurial business before I began looking for co-ops, but now I really think it's a good fit for me. I really enjoy the personalized feeling throughout the work environment. I come in contact with senior management every single week; it's only the third week and I've been in a staff meeting with the CEO. I didn't even think of things like that as an entry-level full-time position, let alone a college intern.
To wrap up this random train of thoughts... Now when I'm sitting in class and wondering to myself, "When will I EVER need to know this? Or even be able to apply it to anything that I will ever do?" I will be more patient. You never know where life will lead you...

Time Flies When You're Having Fun
Dear Kari, Ashley, Nadia, and Heather:
It's almost hard to remember what week it is because I feel like I've been here for months. That is something I'd like to thank you all for. It's an amazing feeling to be happy to come into work. I never know what to expect, but with events always happening, there is always something new and exciting. An upcoming event for me to look forward to is a field trip to the ACP meeting with Kari! I'm really anticipating a real-world experience outside of the office to see how my work and my company is going to impact the hospitalist industry.
Working with Ashley with Web 2.0 has been a great learning experience. Many people my age are "knowledgeable" about Facebook and YouTube - but only for personal social needs. Here, I get the opportunity to update and control SHM's accounts and provide information to the public. This is definitely a skill that I am looking forward to MASTERING. (Yes, I will be a master.) I am pretty confident I will learn everything there is to know about Facebook and YouTube. Our YouTube page is especially sweet if no one has checked it out yet... http://youtube.com/SHMLive
Nadia, you are hilarious to me. I enjoy our mini shopping site updates. Thanks for teaching me how to effectively use everything: Pequod, Informz, Basecamp, etc.
Heather and I haven't really worked together on a lot of things, but hopefully this will change! I am really interested in PR, especially how it impacts a non-profit. There are some PR-related skills I'd like to fine-tune, such as writing and communication.
Things to know about me... I can be pretty weird. Nadia already knows I get really frustrated at technology and yell at my computer a lot. I organize my thoughts out loud, and it confuses people a lot. Sometimes I can be a slow learner and I tried to stay organized so that I can manage my time more wisely and understand things more easily. (Ahem, sorry the matchbacks took so long, Kari!) Hopefully, with the help of everyone's patience, I will be able to do everything with flying colors soon.
Thanks for putting up with me thus far, ladies. :)
P.S. I'd like to request more delicious sushi lunch sessions.

My super supervisors!
Hi everyone! I am currently sitting in a hotel room in Williamsburg, VA. In a few minutes we will be going to the fields for a walk through for tonight's game. I will be sitting on the sideline, because of my stupid bum knee :(. Anyway.... Katie and Todd are my supervisors at SHM. They have made me feel really comfortable here, and it surprises me how much trust/faith they have in me, and all of the other MA's. I really appreciate that I do not sit around all day making photo copies, because in five years I do not think knowing how to work a copy machine will get me very far. At first I may seem very shy, but I promise you, I am not. I guess you can say that I get nervous in front of authority, but as I stated in an earlier blog, that is a goal of mine that I want to get out of this experience - being able to communicate with high authority better.
I find it amazing that even though there are a million things going on at SHM every day, Katie and Todd always want to make sure I have something to do, and I am okay. In the future, I hope to become more familiar with all the plans and meetings that go on at SHM, and contribute more, and I hope that my supervisors continue to encourage me to take part in things. Also, I want them to feel comfortable knowing that when they give me an assignment, not only will I do it, but I will do it right. I know that I am just getting used to the company, so this is not only a hope for them, but also for myself. In a few weeks, I hope that I get assigned something, and all three of us know that I will do it on time, and 100% correct. Other than that, I just hope that my supervisors, other full timers, and my fellow MA's all treat each other with respect day in and day out. For some reason, I do not think that will ever be a problem. Thanks for a great three weeks. Time to get on another bus and venture out to William and Mary. Maybe on my voyage, something will come across my mind for the other post, and I will post later on today. See you all on Monday!

An Open Letter...
Hi Everyone - welcome to week 3!
For 3 of you...(Natasha and Reshma) excluded, last week marked the start of having a direct supervisor and a team that you'll be working with on a regular basis. Hopefully the week was a good one where you got to know everyone a little better and began to flesh out some specific areas that you'll take ownership of for the 5+ months you've got remaining with us.
So...with that in mind...this week's assignment (Em - hopefully you're reading this before Friday :->) is:
Write an "open letter/note" to the your direct supervisor and the other members of your team (if applicable). It's up to you what this note should include, but I suspect it's a little bit about your hopes/goals, how you see yourself fitting in, special requests you might have, and things your team should just generally know about you (but don't already).
In addition...1 time this week, I'd like you to blog about something that happened during the week...it might be an exciting experience, or perhaps something that got you thinking about the big picture...it's up to you.
Your posts are due by the time you leave the office this coming Friday (4/17)...if you're off Friday, then they're due your last day in the office this week.
See you in the AM....
Todd

Life & Creativity
WEEK TWO: I feel that week two is the real first week of work.. We're finally getting to experience the true essence of SHM and take on different responsibilities. I feel really lucky to go home everyday and say all the assignments I got to do at work, and feel proud that SHM allows us to step up. Talking to other people on co-op I feel bad for the different mindless tasks they are stuck doing all day while I am here getting to do just as much as the full timers.. I am excited to get to know more about everyone and am glad that everyone is so approachable and eager to help us out!
When it comes to myself I am pretty confident most of the time- this is usually because I stay within my comfort zone (which lucky for me is pretty big!) One thing I am coming to see in my two weeks here thus far is how I need to get comfortable with my creativity! Not to say that i'm not creative, but my confidence is always significantly lower when it comes to "artsy" type projects. I think that in two weeks however I can already feel a change. So far in one week I got to do two different projects that involved design and creativity.. I realized how uncomfortable and lost I felt when they were assigned!! ..Luckily Christine gave me some great guidance and I understood them better and became more confident. I know this is the hardest part of marketing for me and I hope that if I keep doing more projects and allowing myself to feel a bit uncomfortable at times, I can see that the risks I take might make for a better result! I also feel that I have three great girls that have already given me input & confidence (thanks team =] ) that have already helped me so much in two weeks. I hope to start thinking out of the box and unleashing my creative side!

Adaptation...
It is nearing the end of my second week at SHM, and I'm starting to feel comfortable with the environment. Some things that are still new and hard to grasp for me are: management and the independence we're given as MAs.
As far as management goes, it is not only time management and being managed by marketing leads and Todd that I think will be difficult. A lot of the difficulties are me being able to manage myself and the way in which I approach my work. Sometimes I over-analyze things and make them more complicated than they need to be. Sometimes I get stuck really easily and I lose confidence in my work. Also, Todd talked to me about managing up, which is something that I've never done before in the work environment. Although now that I think about it, the same thing happens with my parents. Sometimes, they don't understand certain things or can't see things from a different perspective. That's where I step in. So since we are all a family, I can relate those skills to SHM as well.
Also in my previous work experience, there was no real independence. I had flexible hours and whatnot, but I had specific tasks to do and a specific way to do them. Here, I am able to own my work to the fullest extent, and that is definitely something that I will strive to take advantage of. Even though it seems like a difficult concept now, I'm sure that by the time I leave SHM, I will admire the fact that I was given the opportunity to be independent.

First Week
It’s already been over a week and I can’t believe it. I have learned so much in just that time, not only about the Q.I. department, but a little about every department. I have also learned things about Microsoft Office 2007 that I’ve never even heard of before! This job, as SHM promised, is keeping me very busy. Along with that aspect, I love that I am learning so much.
I thought the hardest part about working at SHM would be waking up early and getting here on time. However, I have gotten so used to it already that it should not be a problem at all. But what I do feel will be the hardest part about working here is maintaining a good pace with my work. Because a good portion of my work involves research, I will spend more time on doing that than my other tasks. I will have to improve my online research skills so that I can perform searches in the most efficient way, without wasting time. However, I feel that this is not something difficult to improve upon. I plan on finding the best organizations that provide the type of information that our department is looking for and focusing more on them for the information. Also, I figured if I stay more organized, I will be able to move quickly through documents while researching. So, that I feel is the hardest part of my job and I’m sure that it will not be hard at all after I become more organized and more used to doing the research.
I have enjoyed working here for as long as I have, everyone is so nice and helpful! I’m excited to be working with everyone here and learning whatever I can. :)

One week deep..
So, it has been a week since my first day at SHM. Every day I have learned something new about the company and the endeavors that I am going to encounter. I am really excited to be a part of the marketing department, and for my voice to actually be heard, and considered.
I think the hardest thing I am going to have to get used to is all of the different online systems. Being very organized and having to do things before a certain time period is also a concern of mine. However, I confident that this will not be a problem for me, because I have had due dates for 14 years of school. Basecamp, informz, pequod, iMIS, and so forth... not so much. The first time I looked at some of the websites/programs, I thought I was reading a different language. Now, a week later, I understand some things, but there is still a lot that I need to learn. Hopefully it will not be difficult, and I end up laughing at myself for thinking it was difficult.
The most important step to take in order for this to be easy, is to talk to my co-workers and ask questions. I understand that I can not do everything on my own, and I am surrounded by a lot of people who know these websites like the back of their hand, and are willing to help me. Also, by exploring on my own, and doing research through the sites, I can learn a lot on my own as well. I believe that in September I will find myself laughing that I thought I would have a hard time learning these tasks.
Anyone reading this, be ready for some questions from me! :)

Day Six and Counting
Hi Everyone...
As you read this, I'm on a plane to Chicago for our final HM09 site visit...I'll be back Tuesday afternoon if US Airways cooperates...Wednesday AM if they don't.
You've been here for a week now (congratulations). In the span of 5 days I know (mainly because many of us already chatted) that you've started to find your way and figured out how things work in our office. You've also started to get used to what it's like to come to work 5 days a week and probably are wondering if you ever have to go back to class.
With all that in mind...our theme this week on Collective Reality is getting in a groove.
Before 5pm on Friday, please respond to this question:
"With a week under your belt, what do you think is going to be the hardest thing to get used to when it comes to working at SHM? What do you plan on doing to turn the hardest thing into an something easy that you end up laughing at (because you tamed it)?"
Don't forget that you can share other thoughts from the week and reply to others comments!
Hope you're having a good Monday - see you tomorrow!
Todd
P.S. Welcome Reshma - SHM's Quality Assistant to Collective Reality. Reshma is a Drexel co-op student like everyone else - only difference is that she's working directly with our QI department as opposed to us here in Membership and Marketing

Starting at SHM!
Hey everyone! My name is Reshma Patel. I am a junior at Drexel and my major is health sciences. I plan to go to PA school this fall, hopefully! I want to become a physician assistant but I’m not sure what I want to specialize in. I just discovered that there’s something called a Hospitalist Physician Assistant through SHM and I’m growing more interested in it. But anyways, I’m from Columbus, NJ, it’s near Trenton if you’re like where is that?! I’m so glad to be currently here in Philly because I love the city! Philly is like a subtle version of NYC, which could be a good thing; however, I am a big fan of NYC. I one day want to settle down around that city and maybe work at a hospital there.
Over the next six months, I would like to first of all build a good friendship with all of my co-workers. Everyone is extremely warm and welcoming here, I really love this environment. Secondly, I simply want to learn as much as I can during this co-op. Whether it is about hospitalists, disease prevention, marketing, or playing the wii, I want to learn whatever is thrown my way. I want to walk out of this experience with as much knowledge as possible, not only to apply to my career, but also to my life in general. And lastly, I would like to do as much as I can for the SHM. I want to contribute all my skills and efforts to this organization. This is my first real job because I have always worked part-time at Drexel libraries before. I am looking forward to applying my newly learned skills to this job and have at least a little bit of an impact on SHM because every bit of effort does count.
One of my all-time favorite TV shows is That 70’s show and Joy told me that she went to school with Danny Masterson’s (Steve Hyde) new fiancĂ© Bijou Philips. I thought that was pretty cool!
I'm happy to be joining the SHM team and I look forward to working with you all and having a great learning experience!

First Days @ SHM.....
I have never felt so peaceful in a working environment.
Hello, I am Natasha Torrence. I am currently a junior at Drexel University, and the newest graphic design assistant at SHM. I love art and design. What's important is that I am an artist first, and a designer second. Don't get me wrong, I love being both! As an artist, I create things from the heart & soul, pure expression. As a designer, I am trained to provide visual solutions for a person's ideas and overall agenda. My goal is to fuse the two: creating the best design while maintaining artistic integrity and expression, and it can be done! I like all my pieces to have a bit of 'me' in it. (how much 'me' is up to the boss, lol ). The areas in design I enjoy the most are restaurant & lounges, interior application (walls, tables, floors etc.), and 3-D interior objects. Most of my work is inspired by nature. I love God, we are very close. I also looove sports and cars. Cars drive me crazy!
Here at SHM, I would like to become moreknowledgable in the entire working design process. Starting from the origins of the marketing scheme, all the way to working directly with the print press. I want to learn more about marketing, because it is a necessity in the design world. You have to market not only your clients, but yourself! This will help me become a more solid businesswoman. Designing is great, but it is also a business. Design is a culmination of art, business, and technology. I also want to increase my skills in the design software. The programs are so extensive, it takes years of experience working with the programs to achieve mastery. At the end of my experience, I want to SHM to be proud of my work. I want to evolve the look of the design pieces, giving to them my uniqueness.
I found out today that Katie boxes everyday, I think that is awesome! I have been wanting to box for so long.
