Week One

After a fun-filled birthday weekend (NYC and the Casino), I was really sad to see the break come to an end. Monday morning I couldn't help to wonder what would happen when I arrived to SHM. It was like the first day at a new school almost. Will they like me? What If I mess something up?

Arriving at SHM pretty much relieved most of my worries. The schedule was amazing because it let us interact with different individuals and get a grasp of their prior experiences. Each day brings different situations and that's something that definitely keeps the day interesting. Another aspect I really liked is the dress code. I love that it's more casual than the typical co-op position would normally be. Most people are friendly here and that's also a huge relief as well.

I'm very satisfied so far :) . Week 2 should be interesting and I hope that taking over the front desk won't be as intimidating as it's made out to be. Here's to hoping that every week goes by as smoothly as week 1 (with more work of course).

First Week

So far my favorite part of the week has been meeting everyone and getting a chance to know a little bit about the people I’ve met. Quite honestly nothing has been overwhelming the first few days. The only overwhelming part for me would be learning some of the software and trying to memorize everyone’s names. The few co-workers that have been giving the MA’s training over the past few days have made it a very seamless transition into SHM’s working environment. The atmosphere of SHM is something that I never would have guessed coming in as a MA. Starting off the first day I was very surprised by the effort put forth of various employees to get to know me on a personal level within minutes of meeting them. That took a lot of weight off my shoulders for the first day and made me understand how SHM’s employees keep such a laid back atmosphere. The part of the week that has gone just right has been the various personal 101’s. Besides getting to know fellow co-workers, I actually learned a majority of what I know about SHM through the personal 101’s and their output of the company. I also really enjoyed being trained on some of the various software’s and systems by some of the employees in different departments. It was great being able to meet some of the people who I normally wouldn’t get a chance to work with or even get to know. Even our lunch the first day was a great to get a chance to introduce myself and learn about SHM through some of the people who have been in the company for a while and have the knowledge and experience to share with us. Something that really stuck out to me as impressive is the color teams. I think that’s a great way to get to know others and get more involved with the company besides everyone’s daily work routine. As far as the first week I have been very impressed by the people and SHM in general. I look forward to continue working here as I learn more and start to do some real work of my own.

1st post, I guess

None else seemed to have posted anything yet so I guess I'll start.

It has been a very, very event filled week so far and we're only halfway done. I would have to say that the most shocking thing is how laid back this company can be without getting off track. Coming from 2 previous jobs were even leaning back in your chair was considered to be too laid back, it was a refreshing, and extremely welcomed change. It boggles my mind that not many companies are this laid back because it tends to make the work day less stressful and thus more productive. keeping your employees happy always leads to good things.

I would also like to note that sitting at the front desk has to be one of the most intimidating and awkward things I've ever had to do. 90% of outside calls come to the front desk and it feels like you're the captain of the U.S.S. SHM. I don't know, maybe that's just me.

Week One.

My plan for Sunday night was to treat Monday morning like the first day of school— way back in Kindergarten—when I had a “when the sun goes down” bedtime. Whether it was to combat the stress and exhaustion of the previous few days or just to catch up on “beauty sleep” (not that I really need it)—I wanted to look and feel my best for my first day at SHM. But of course, this is reality fourteen years later, and nothing ever goes according to plan. When does it ever? A friend of mine decided to have a birthday party in her suite, and I of course took fashionably late to mean I should get there two hours after it started. I had just wanted to stop in, do the whole wave and walk thing, and get back to my apartment by 8—my amended bed time. Well, after leaving around 8:50, I forgot about my apartment ‘floor meeting’ at 9, which was followed by food and awkward conversation and everything but sleep. I’m gonna estimate that I shut my eyes no sooner than 2 the next morning; who knows when I actually passed out. I wanted to wake up at 7:45, giving myself 45 minutes to get dressed and out the door. Instead, I was subjected to a rather rude awakening at 6:30 when my “full-time fabulous” roommate decided she needed an hour and a half to pick out an outfit for her 8 o’clock class. -___-. So I’m up, and not looking nearly as beautiful as I intended. I flew out the door around 8:30, convinced I was going to be late for a job that starts at 9:30 and can't be more than 30 minutes away, and arrived in the downstairs lobby of 1500 Spring Garden at 8:54, almost 40 minutes early for work. Go me. Can I say that as soon as I set foot into the office, for my first real day here, I could not have been happier. The stress and exhaustion of the night before kind of seemed irrelevant. I knew the staff would be friendly, or at least ‘play nice,’ but I had no idea how laid back and hilarious they all genuinely are. The group is so diverse in character and yet they all operate as a unit, constantly supporting each other. I was nervous about being thrown into a situation where I was the new girl, overwhelmed with responsibility while possessing very little knowledge, but that was just not the case here. I entered my rather spacious ‘cubicle’ to find a schedule on the desk in front of me, detailing every half hour of my day, and it didn’t feel daunting as I had anticipated. In fact, looking around at everyone else, whether knee deep in work or just chatting away with each other, it made me feel really welcome. Now what makes me nervous is the fact that I don’t feel overwhelmed yet. My goal is to stay on top of my responsibilities, to carry them out well, and to finally cut the vicious cycle of procrastination. While it’s only day three, I am loving SHM. The free sushi I got on my first day also didn’t hurt. Talk about delicious.

9. all of our crazyyyyy members and their crazy questions.
10. EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING. Seriously, this has been such an awesome experience and I have gotten so much out of it... 6 months is definitely not enough.
